Abstract

Indian Classical dance forms have their origins in the 2nd century, evolving through the ages from temple traditions. Many families in India continue to encourage their children to learn these classical forms, supported by various government programs, schemes and scholarships. At the school level, National Education Policy (2020) emphasizes on integrating arts in education for all students. However, schools often lack understanding and resources to support young performers, who struggle to balance academics and their art pursuits. A research study conducted by Gundlupet (2024) indicated that parents of children upto class 5 encourage them to learn classical artforms, but as children grow older, dedicating time to riyaz becomes challenging. Parents in the study reported being comfortable with about two hours a week devoted to learning of classical art forms. This paper proposes establishing talent hubs in schools such that these artists are nurtured beyond the training and mentoring they receive from their gurus, allowing more hours for talent development alongside academics. The goal of such talent hubs is to create a nurturing environment that identifies and cultivates students’ talents in Indian classical dance through a rigorous identification process and a holistic nurturing program. Grounded in the Panchakosha model and the Natyashastra principles, the nurturing program ensures a comprehensive approach to the development of students’ physical, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual growth. The proposed idea of the talent hub includes a student identification, specialized curriculum development, flexibility in academic expectations, collaborative support from experts in the field, and innovative approaches to foster and showcase student talent in Bharatanatyam and Kathak.
